Fort Kent is a town in Aroostook County, Maine, USA. The city is home to the campus of the University of Maine at Fort Kent. Fort Kent is also home to a biathlete Olympic training center, an annual CAN-AM dogsled race, and Blockhouse Fort Kent, built in reaction to the Aroostook War and in modern times designated a place National Historic. Major industries are agriculture (especially potatoes and forestry) and textiles. Fort Kent is the northern terminus of U.S. Route 1 and the end point of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. It is also home to a battle which took place in the Aroostook war or war without bloodshed which took place in the years 1800.

The city is economically and culturally linked to the Canadian city of Clair and Saint-François-de-Madawaska, in both the County Madawaska, NB, directly opposite the Saint John River. Most children on the Canadian side to school in french while their U.S. counterparts to school mainly in English.

Despite this, 62 per cent of people in Fort Kent are habitual users of french. The variety of french speaking at Fort Kent and most of the St. John River Valley, however, is distinct from varieties of french and international resembles more closely the varieties of french speaking Quebec and New Brunswick. It is called “Valley french” or “Brayon.” Many residents have also US-Canadian dual citizenship.
